His hometown is in Strawberry, Texas. Every summer he begins a new exploration of unique places or people.
In 2026 he decided to travel to the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas, KS, because it's listed on Roadside America with a top rating of 5 smiley faces. This rating means the site is quirky and unique!
Sharkknight has read about grassroots art and is ready to experience it in person. Also known as outsider, visionary, self-taught, primitive, or recycled art, grassroots art is often created in its natural setting by artists guided by a strong personal vision, many of whom are senior citizens. These everyday makers may spend years in retirement building environments meant to be seen as a whole. With no formal rules to limit them, they create mainly to please themselves, with little concern for whether their work finds an audience or gains recognition. On this trip, Sharkknight expects to see artwork made from wood, metal, fabric, cardboard, limestone, and even chewing gum.
Right inside the front door, Sharkknight discovers the local yard environment of Ed Root, a farmer who lived south of Lucas. From the 1940s through 1960, Mr. Root broke glass containers and collected interesting rocks to embed in concrete shapes and forms. More than 250 sculptures once lined his country driveway and farmstead.

The final challenge will end August 28th, just in time for the Adam's Apple Festival here in Lucas on August 29th, which we will be hosting an on-site LEGO© Competition (be sure to register for that on our website!) There will be a People's Choice Award in September.
The official “Lucas LEGO© Challenge” will take place Saturday, August 29, during the 52nd Annual Adam’s Apple Festival in Lucas, Kansas. This is an independent LEGO© brick-building tournament.
