World's Largest Travel Souvenir Plate by Erika Nelson

Erika Nelson has been spearheading this sculpture project since May of 2005.

Lots of prep work has gone into the project to date, including community brainstorming sessions, engineering troubleshooting, surface preparation, site preparation, and design development and finalization.

This expect the unexpected sculptures project is partially funded by the National Endowment to the Arts and Kansas Arts Commission.

Hat's off to the organizational skills of Steve Schultz and the hard work City of Lucas crew, who hauled the 14-foot decommissioned satellite dish from Wilson Telephone Company to it's new home along K-18 highway.

Thanks also goes to J. Jean and Mildred Mettlen for sharing part of their milo field for the sculpture.

The plate will continue to be painted with vignettes of Lucas history, industry, and attractions.

Erika will begin painting on the massive monument to tourism late August, 2006 through September, and into October, until the surface is worthy of World's Largest status.  The bottom rim border of the plate  is already painted with some of the Smoky River basin petroglyphs, upper border is the local history with the Fred Dininny story and the center border is, what else, but rings of the world famous Brant's bologna.

So, drive on by and watch World's Largest History in the Making! And, please don't honk at the artist..

See Erika's online blog as painting progresses, WITH WONDERFUL INSIGHTS AND CLOSE-UPS OF DETAILS IN THE PLATE!
